The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. – Genesis 13:14-16 ESV
What did Abram do to cause God to choose him to be the father of a great nation?
What did you or I do to cause Jesus to give his life for us? I think the answer is “nothing” to both questions.
Another ancient path is found here. Our grandchildren can do nothing to cause God to favor them over others on their own. Our great God does, however, tell us in His word “He chooses”. HE chooses to reveal Himself to us. He chose to speak to Abram and Abram obeyed.
Paul said it best in his letter to the church in Rome. Romans 10:14 “How, then, can people call on someone they have not believed? And how can they believe in someone they have not heard about? And how can they hear without someone preaching”? We don’t know for sure why God chose to speak to Abram. Could it be that He knew Abram would listen?
We must pray consistently, that our grown children and grandchildren would have receptive hearts to the working of the Holy Spirit as He speaks to their need and calls them to follow Christ. The good soil Jesus spoke of received the seed (Word) and bore fruit. The soil had been prepared. Don’t be surprised if God uses you to speak to them of the things of God preparing the soil of a receptive heart. Count it a joy!
